Big Bheki and the Cone of Uncertainty: Preparing for Our First... CYCLONE
The title sounds like it's another volume in the wizard series, but it’s about a phenomenon that, until recently, felt as unreal to me as magical worlds: the tropical cyclones.
Bheki is a cyclone that’s been forming over the Indian Ocean for a few days now. No one was bothered at first, but Bheki heard the call of Africa and set off toward Madagascar, gaining destructive power along the way.
See that tiny dot of Mauritius on the map? That’s where we are, anxiously waiting to see if we’ll end up in the cone of uncertainty.
An existential question immediately popped into my head: don’t we spend our entire lives in some kind of "cone of uncertainty"? Aaron, however, wasn’t in the mood for a philosophical debate—he was busy untangling the logistics of charging all our phones, batteries, and laptops with just two adapters for five outlets.
The cone, which represents the area potentially affected by Bheki, is inching closer every hour. Mauritius and its sister island, Réunion, are on high alert. Conditions are dynamic, so meteorological stations recommend keeping a close eye on updates. Bheki is barreling across the ocean at speeds of up to 150 km/h and could reach us as early as Monday.
How are our preparations coming along? We found three candles and a box of matches in one of the kitchen drawers of our rented apartment. Not much, so we headed to the store—being without light is a bit scary, and only Bheki knows if and how long the power might be out. We came back with bags full of essentials: "Lazy Dodo" rum and toilet paper.
We forgot the candles...
